Registered Vet Tech / Veterinary Financial Assistance Floater OVERALL SUMMARY: The Registered Veterinary Technician/Financial Assistance Program Floater (Floater) reports to the Veterinary Practice Manager and provides support to the Veterinary Clinic as well as the Veterinary Financial Assistance Program. The primary function of this role is to act as a floater, dividing time between the Veterinary Clinic and the Support Center, provide additional support in the capacity of a Registered Veterinary Technician and Client Service Representative in the Vet Clinic and as a Veterinary Financial Assistance Program Coordinator in the Support Center. As a Registered Veterinary Technician, provide support by working with the staff veterinarians to ensure the health and well-being of all dogs and puppies under care at Guide Dogs for the Blind where all aspects of veterinary medicine are performed. As a VFA coordinator, provide a high level of service and support to graduates and veterinary clinics serving GDBs canine population. This includes professional advice, education and advocacy to constituents and outside veterinary teams. POSTION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Support assigned veterinarian with all aspects of patient care. Induce and monitor anesthesia, develop anesthetic plans. Establish and maintain IV catheters. Administer IV, IM, and SQ injections. Administer vaccinations, treatments, special diets. Properly position, expose, restrain patient being x-rayed. Undertake dental procedures (e.g. prophylactic cleaning and polishing, chart dentition, dental extractions, radiography) and educate clients on dental care. Assist with surgery and endoscopy; suture closure layer after surgery, assess pain levels. Maintain all surgical, dental, endoscopic and technical equipment. Understand pharmacology/pharmacokinetics in order to understand medications and calculate medication/fluid doses properly. Perform comprehensive examinations including all body systems and perform laboratory sampling and interpret in-house lab tests Accurately maintain specialized medical records both in GDB database and for outside veterinarians. Admit and discharge patients; counsel constituents in critical and euthanasia cases; consult with outside veterinary specialists; follow up with constituents over phone and in person. Solo vet clinic weekend contact - triage calls, approve outside vet expenses, give medical advice to constituents, kennel, and training staff, contact vet on call, when intervention is needed, and give detailed report. Answer phones, schedule appointments, manage emails from vets, other departments and constituents, fill prescriptions, and all other aspects of the Client Service Representative position. Provide extensive phone and computer support to outside constituents by ensuring that canine population receives the high quality care in a timely manner. Authorize Veterinary Financial Assistance to dogs in need, utilizing the program and guidance of the VFA Specialist and veterinarians. Resolve outstanding trouble tickets in a timely and effective manner, by investigating potential causes and making recommendations of payments to accounting team. Communicate resolution and instructions to clinics and constituents. Coordinate closely with internal veterinary staff and outside veterinary providers in order to create a close support network for dogs and graduates. Answer routine to complex questions from external constituents about the organization, its functions and programs or general issues related to the blind and visually impaired. Identify and appropriately hand off calls requiring other GDB staff assistance. Documentation of all calls per protocol in a timely and appropriate manner, utilizing the appropriate database or other tools. Meet budget guidelines by appropriately managing approvals based on needs assessment pertinent to each financial assistance inquiry/request. Support GDB programs as assigned. Maintain updated knowledge of the dog and class training programs at GDB. Adhere to our organization's safety policies and procedures and encourage others to do the same. Promptly report incidents and accidents according to campus procedures. Enter Vet Bills into the database in a timely and accurate manner. POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: Licensed to work as a Registered Veterinary Technician in state; at least three years' experience desirable. AS in Veterinary Technology or equivalent. PennHip certified or become certified within 6 months of hire. Must safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90 pounds, with varying strength and manageability. Ability to safely lift up to 40 pounds. Employees are required to seek assistance when lifting dogs or objects weighing more than 40 pounds. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products, including Outlook, e-mail, Word, Excel, and Access or other database software (Salesforce experience a plus). Call center or administrative receptionist experience in a fast-paced environment is highly desirable. Ability to identify objective and subjective problems and situations, develop and communicate effective solutions in a timely manner. Excellent customer service and communication skills, including: crisis management, interviewing, conflict resolution, motivation, empathy, clarity of oral and written communication. Ability to professionally represent the organization on the phone and in person. Ability to work independently and to collaborate with team members in local and remote locations. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Self-starter with high level of initiative, follow-through, skilled at multi-tasking, attention to detail, organization and prioritization. Flexible to a divided schedule between the Vet Clinic and support Center based on departmental needs. Schedule will typically be Monday - Friday, however occasional Saturday, Sunday and Holiday shifts are required. Available to work 2 Holidays per year. Available to be on-call 3 - 4 days per month to assist with afterhours emergency surgeries. Shifts typically are from 5pm -7am. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS: This is a full-time, non-exempt position
