Job Description:

POSITION TITLE:-- Apprentice Guide Dog Mobility Instructor REPORTS TO:--Director of Training--(San Rafael)---------------------------------------------- ------------------ OVERALL SUMMARY:-- Under the guidance of a Mentor Guide Dog Mobility Instructor (GDMI), Apprentice GDMI---s are responsible for training "class ready" guide dogs and for instructing clients in the use of those dogs, resulting in safe and effective guide dog teams. The Apprentice progresses through three years of theoretical and practical course work and skills assessments.-- This program meets the GDMI educational requirements of the International Guide Dog Federation and the State of California Guide Dog--Instructor licensing preparations.-- POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implements GDB techniques for dog care and kennel maintenance within their team for their string of dogs.
  • Assists in training an entire string of "class ready" dogs up to organizational standards.
  • Provides accurate written weekly training progress reports on each dog within their training string. Effectively reports orally to superiors on all aspects of training, class work, and fieldwork.
  • Under supervision assists in class-training program for students in class, and effectively teaches students in the use of "class ready" dogs.
  • Alone or in tandem, conducts graduate follow-up visits and assists, applicant interviews, and visits rehabilitation agencies as needed. Provides Field Services with accurate reports on each applicant interview and graduate visit.--
  • Completes course work and other testing required to pass Guide Dog Instructor licensing exams conducted by the State of California.
  • Represents Guide Dogs and the Training Dept. outside of the organization through speaking engagements, graduations, tours, and conventions in a positive and effective way.
  • Adheres to our organization's safety policies and procedures and encourages others to do the same. Promptly reports incidents and accidents according to campus procedures.
  • Undertakes other duties as assigned. -- --POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Current driver license and insurability at normal risk rates.
    • Experience as a Canine Welfare Training Technician with GDB or equivalent.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Able to withstand repeated bending, stooping, kneeling and squatting.
    • Able to withstand sustained, brisk walking in all weather.
    • Self-starter with ability to lead others and work independently.
    • Must safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90 pounds, with varying strength and manageability. Able to safely lift up to 40 pounds. Employees are required to seek assistance when lifting dogs or objects weighing more than 40 pounds.
    • Able to communicate via voice mail and e-mail; able to complete basic tasks in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
    • Demonstrates high standards of professional conduct and demonstrates Guide Dog for the Blind values.
    • Able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays and spend nights in Dormitory.----
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
