Job Description:

The mission of the Prison University Project is to provide excellent higher education to people incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, to support increased access to higher education for incarcerated people, and to stimulate public awareness about higher education access and criminal justice. The Prison University Project is a national leader in providing quality higher education opportunities to incarcerated people and in expanding access to higher education within California's prison system and nationwide. In recognition of our work the organization was awarded the 2015 National Humanities Medal by President Obama.The Prison University Project is currently in a period of tremendous growth. After twenty years of operating a robust, high-quality higher education degree program at San Quentin, the organization is seeking independent accreditation. This new college will be the first of its kind, a world-class college based at San Quentin, designed solely for incarcerated students.Job DescriptionReporting to the Chief Academic Officer, the Director of Student Affairs is responsible for managing the administration and operation of the college program's Student Affairs division, and has oversight responsibility in related matters, including student advocacy and advising; admissions and registration (including SIS, add/drop processes); student tracking; student orientations, workshops, and events (e.g., graduation); course scheduling; and interfacing with key contacts in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Director of Student Affairs will build out college's alumni affairs office, pending capacity.The Director of Student Affairs is responsible for developing, improving, and regularly assessing policies and processes aimed at supporting students' capacity to be active, engaged and successful learners, and citizens in the college setting. This position requires working with multiple stakeholders across the college program and organization and serving as a knowledgeable resource for best practices, college program policies, and accreditation standards. The Director of Student Affairs supports college program efforts in providing a campus climate that fosters diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, personal development, and an integrated co-curricular student learning experience. Finally, the Director of Student Affairs works closely with the Chief Academic Officer and the Academic Program Director to lead the college program in providing high quality, inclusive, and accessible education.This is a challenging leadership position that requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously, adjusting quickly to changes needed on a daily basis. The Director of Student Affairs works closely with students on a regular basis, participates in college program committees, and serves as the primary administrative representative on all matters related to student services. The job is performed both inside San Quentin and at the Prison University Project offices. Hours include at least two evenings a week and regular weekends.The Student Affairs Director also supervises administrative staff, including a Registrar Associate, a Student Affairs Associate, and two clerks inside the prison.Core job duties-Lead the College Program's student affairs division, including supervision of a Registrar Associate, a StudentAffairs Associate, and two clerks inside the prison.-Oversee and implement policies and systems of admissions and registration, with support from RegistrarAssociateDevelop and oversee systems for advising and student support, in collaboration with other staff-Work closely with the Chief Academic Officer and Academic Program Director on semester planning-Support extracurricular activities and workshops and collaborate with program team on their execution-Supervise student transfers from other prisons-Conference regularly with students and provide advising and support-Escort faculty into San Quentin several afternoons and evenings per week, and provide support on-site for facultyand students-Maintain ongoing communication with San Quentin administrators and staff, regularly and as needed, in areassuch as records, student movement in the prison, and transfers to and from San QuentinOther job responsibilities-Support Chief Academic Officer in regular assessment cycles for accreditation-Participate in regular (bimonthly) staff meetings, and other organizational meetings-Participate in weekly program staff meetingsKey success factors-Master's degree or commensurate experience-Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in college administration-Strong commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence, equity, inclusion, and cultural, intellectual andpolitical diversity-3-5 years of experience supervising and leading teams-Excellent administrative skills-Strong management skills, including the ability to give clear and actionable feedback, to support each teammember's development, and to support individual goal-setting of supervisees-Outstanding communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, etc.)-Ability to create and/or implement systems for managing large amounts of data, as well as a fast-paced flow oftasks and information-Ability to manage multiple competing priorities under tight deadlines-Ability to interact patiently and diplomatically with a wide variety of constituencies-Strong organizational and time management skills; detail-orientation and capacity to multitask-Analytical thinker, team-builder-Mastery of computer skills (MS Office Suite with strong emphasis on Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, Groups, andCalendar, Salesforce CRM, etc.)-Comfortable working regular nights and weekends-On prison escort days, position is physically active, including spending at least 1/3 of the day walking or standing,a 1/2 mile walk at least twice a day, and lifting up to 15 lbs.All applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to PUP's mission and proven ability to work with multi-racial, multi-ethnic, intergenerational, and multi-gendered communities.
