Job Description:
Nature camp educator
Vilda is hiring an instructor for our 100% outdoor summer camp at
China Camp State park, San Rafael (Tracks and Tides). We are also
looking for an assistant at Tracks and Tides as well as another San
Rafael Camp (Wild Creatures, Bows, and Skills). The camp is a
combination of nature exploration and play, hiking, and learning
about local plants and animals in the mornings, and beach play,
kayaking, crafts, and swimming in the afternoons.
We are currently looking for instructors who can work 30-40
hours/week during our summer season (weekly day camps running
mid-June through mid-August). We may also have availability in our
ongoing school year programs.

WHAT DO INSTRUCTORS DO?:
Instructors plan and lead nature connection education (often with
the help of a program assistant) in groups of about 12 children or
less, maintaining group safety, facilitating positive group
dynamics, deepening children's knowledge and connection to the
local environment through leading games, storytelling, exploration
and the art of questioning in the morning. After lunch, you
supervise the children swimming and kayaking on the bay, playing on
the beach, or doing crafts projects. Instructors also communicate
with parents via email and in-person about the week's themes and
highlights and mentor their assistant teacher.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
A positive, flexible, and heart-based outlook on life
4 or more years of experience working with children in educational
fields, 2 or more of those in nature education
Knowledge of local plants and animals and a desire to be outdoors
in any weather
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Total comfort in jumping in and teaching a group of 10-15 kids
outdoors and great student management skills
Responsible, enjoy working with a small team
Current first aid and CPR (WFA or WFR preferred)
Reliable transportation and ability to work at our San Rafael or
Fairfax.
Ability to check email weekly and stay on top of communication with
director and parents
OPTIONAL BUT AWESOME:
Some training in the Jon Young 8 Shields lineage, Tom Brown kids
programs or another similar program
Wilderness skills such as animal tracking, survival, foraging, fire
by friction, navigation
Experience with kayaking and/or lifeguarding
Currently based in the North Bay with intentions to stay in the
area
A clean exceptional driving record
COMPENSATION: $24-$30/hour depending on experience
ASSISTANT TEACHERS: help the instructor ensure camper safety and
well-being, lead games or crafts, help children kayak, connect with
the children, and role model kindness, respect, curiosity about
nature, and enthusiasm for camp. Be willing to help out with
supplies, connecting with children, or other needs that come
up.
REQUIREMENTS: love of nature and children, some experience working
with children, comfort around water (the bay at Tracks and Tides
and the creek at Wild Creatures, Bows, and Strings).
ASSISTANT PAY: $15-$23/hour DOE
