Read on to find out more about this opportunity: ABOUT THE POSITION The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Community Development Agency (CDA) are announcing a recruitment for the position Building Inspector I or II. There is currently one (1) full-time vacancy which will be filled at either the Building Inspector II or Building Inspector I level. The Building Inspector I is the entry level class in the Building Inspector series. Incumbents in this class learn how to apply their professional training to a work production environment. The Building Inspector I responds to customer requests for field inspections to determine compliance with approved plans, applicable building standards, local ordinances and CDA policies. In addition, this position engages, advises and assists permit customers and community groups regarding building permit and inspection related issues. As experience is gained, assignments gradually become more complex and are performed with less supervision. The Building Inspector II works with considerable independence in carrying out inspections. They may also function as a specialist to advise other members of the staff in terms of one of the four technical areas of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or structural. Lastly, the Building Inspector II assists the Deputy Director and Building Inspection Services Supervisor to prepare and present continuing education for staff and the public related to the application and enforcement of state and county construction laws and regulations. ABOUT YOU The Highly Qualified Candidate: The ideal candidate is a progressive problem solver who is comfortable working independently, has prior construction experience and possesses a California State issued (current or expired) contractor's license. This individual is an innovator with the ability to assess situations, apply appropriate analysis, interpret applicable laws and regulations, and resolve each situation appropriately. In addition, the ideal candidate possesses excellent communication and coaching skills in code related subject matter and will bring fresh thinking to assist Community Development Agency efforts to develop building permitting programs that engage the Marin public and support success in achieving healthy, safe and sustainable communities. For the Building Inspector II, In addition to the above, the ideal candidate has building inspection experience and possesses professional certifications in excess of the minimum required for the position.The minimum qualifications are:Building Inspector ICollege degree in a construction related subject or Building Inspection program; ORInternational Code Council (ICC) certification in two or more classifications; OROne year of experience equivalent to a Building Inspector I for a governmental agency; ORFive years of residential construction experience as a general contractor and possession of a general contractor's license.Building Inspector IICollege degree in a construction related subject or Building Inspection program and one year of experience equivalent to a Building Inspector I for a governmental agency; ORICC certification for Combination Inspector and one year of experience equivalent to a Building Inspector I for a governmental agency; ORThree years of experience equivalent to a Building Inspector I for a governmental agency.Certificates and LicensesAs a condition of employment, California Health and Safety Code Section 18949.28(a) requires that a Building Inspector must obtain certification in the appropriate fields that are closely related to their primary job function by a recognized state, national or international organization within two years of employment. Not obtaining a Combination Inspector Certification or equivalent within two years of employment may result in termination. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months. Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
