Overview
The Certified Lactation Consultant at Marin Community Clinics (MCC)
provides patients support and education related to breastfeeding.
Consultant ensures patients received information and guidance on
best ways to overcome breastfeeding challenges to ensure babies
receive optimum nutrition.
The Board-Certified Lactation Consultant is responsible for
providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing,
planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the
breastfeeding/ chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping
parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient's
family, significant others, and members of the health care team.
The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and
clinical expertise in breastfeeding/chest-feeding and human
lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the
Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as
defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant
Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by
their professional association, International Lactation Consultant
Association, and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of
care.

Covid-19 Vaccination and Boosters Requirements: - All employees are
required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, including
"health-care" required boosters as a condition of employment,
subject to limited exemptions. New employees are required to
provide proof of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and boosted
before the first day of employment. If you completed your primary
series, received an original booster and it has been more than 2
months from that booster dose - it is recommended, but not required
that you receive the Bivalent booster. -
Responsibilities
Education
- Educates patients in the many facets of breastfeeding,
techniques on proper positioning of newborn, and latching of the
breast. Educates patients in positions for achieving a deep,
comfortable and effective latch.
- Educates patients on the maternal and infant health benefits of
breastfeeding and lactation.
- Educates patients on various techniques to increase milk
supply, medication compatibility, nutrition, breast pumps, milk
storage, alternative feeding methods, and infant formulas.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, providers,
and coworkers, being anadvocate for the patient.
- Provides staff with current evidence-based
breastfeeding/lactation information and support.
- Provides patients with information regarding wellness topics
such as nutrition, preventative services, and exercise to promote
good health habits.
- Develops and coordinates breastfeeding education training
individually and in group setting for patients and staff.
Patient assessment and support
- Assists lactating patients in overcoming breastfeeding
challenges.
- Provides patients with lactation assessment and
management.
- Provides support during all stages of
breastfeeding/lactation.
- Provides patients with phone and telemed
consultations.
- Assesses patient and family emotional, cognitive, social and
motivational determinants in order to provide appropriate lactation
support.
- Documents patient and family education and progress in
accordance with MCC standards.
- Develop documentation record to track patient progress and
concerns.
- Communicates with providers regarding lactation finding and
plan and documents appropriately.
- Reviews patient records to understand any potential
breastfeeding/lactation challenges and how best to provide
support.
Maintaining Lactation program and services
- Stays current and knowledgeable about breastfeeding/lactation
supplies, products and programs.
- Implements and maintains a reference library of breastfeeding
materials appropriate for both health care providers and mothers
interested in learning more about lactation.
- Develops and implements lactation education and screening
program through CPSP case workers (Lactation educators)
- Provides oversight and ongoing education of Lactation educators
(CPSP case workers) who provide lactation education and
screening
- Evaluates equipment related to breastfeeding and maintains
breastfeeding room.
- Establishes and maintains a regular follow-up system of
continuing care for mothers.
- Coordinates patient referrals, care services between clinic
providers, specialist, pharmacy and other required
services.
- Maintains statistics, collects data, analyzes data and
processes results.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Must be an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC).
- Registered Nurse (RN) with prenatal or obstetrical care
experience preferred.
- Professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process.
- Experience with premature infants, newborns and
toddlers.
- High level judgment when dealing with confidential Information
in compliance with HIPPA.
- Experience with preparation and appropriate use of infant
formula.
- Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Office to be
able to conduct research and professional networking.
- Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR)
preferred.
- Knowledge of breastfeeding care and educational principles,
practices, procedures and techniques required to assess learning
needs.
- Knowledge of pharmaceuticals and the effects on lactation pre
and post-partum patients, newborns and toddlers.
Requirements:
- Bilingual in Spanish highly desired.
- Able to verbally communicate with patients and other
staff.
- Ability to demonstrate patience when dealing with fussy
babies.
- Ability to support patients experiencing post-partum
depression.
- Ability to organize information and activities to promote
breastfeeding program.
- Ability to multi task and work in busy clinical environment
setting.
- Able to travel to different clinics as required.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing and walking
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a
computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
